Have We Reached Peak Podcast?

November 13, 2018 Social Media News

If you’re involved in the online marketing world it may seem like podcasting has reached a bit of a saturation.

The moment it seems like everyone is talking about something, though, is usually the time to get in. Because it’s just about to blow up even bigger.

Recent Podcast Growth

I don’t even remember the first time I listened to a podcast. All I know is that over the last 3-5 years, I’ve become a major listener to podcasts.

In fact, podcasting has cut into the amount of video I watch. The reason this is the case is the fact that you can listen to a podcast while doing something else.

You can listen while cooking. You can listen while working out. You can listen while working in the yard or going for a walk. Even while driving in the car.

You can’t do that with video. You can’t do that with text.

And trust me, I’m a big fan of both reading and watching.

I’m not the one that predicted the rise of audio. I think it’s been Gary Vaynerchuk and others. Obviously the companies creating audio products are believers.

I’m just jumping on the bandwagon.

Audio Everywhere

It’s interesting. I just finished reading Good Day!.

Reading the book it made me think about how the world is coming back to audio. But maybe it never really left. It’s just getting easier to listen to all types of audio all the time and also on demand. Whatever you want.

Paul Harvey was enamored when he first heard someone talk on the radio in the 1920s. That is what kids are thinking right now when they pick up their parents phones and find any

Kids today are learning to ask Alexa questions. Forget school. They can just ask Alexa for any answer. And they can do it while they’re eating their cereal in the morning or while brushing their teeth.

A Race For Ears

It may seem like we’re in a moment where podcasts are getting a little too saturated. But the reality is that podcasting is just getting started. It will only get easier to create a podcast. Anchor has already made it incredibly easy. The demand for podcasting is only going to increase. Think about your favorite podcast. Chances are you wish you had more of it.

In the business world, it’s a race for ears. I remember reading about an Anheuser-Busch executive talking about market share. Not market share for the beer industry. Market share for the mouth

That’s what is happening with ears. Music, podcasting, white noise, etc. It’s all a race for share of ears.

Podcasting is having a moment. But now the real work begins for marketers.
